Slovenia 100, Venezuela 85
In this tournament, Luka Dončić would like to emphasize his status as the superior player. Leading Slovenia in their group opener, Dončić showcased his exceptional skills by scoring 37 points, securing seven rebounds, and delivering six assists, ultimately leading to a decisive victory.
Slovenia saw an impressive contribution of 21 points from Mike Tobey.
Brazil 100, Iran 59
In this game, the focus shifted from Brazil’s simple victory to the unfortunate fate of Raul Neto, an experienced NBA player who spent last season with the Cavaliers and had plans to play in Turkey this season. Sadly, he suffered a devastating patellar tendon rupture in his right knee, ending his participation in the World Cup and potentially enduring a lengthy recovery. This injury left his Brazilian teammates visibly distressed.
From the very beginning of the match, it was evident that Brazil would dominate, gaining a 20-point advantage in the opening quarter. Bruno Caboclo, a former NBA athlete, played a pivotal role with 16 points, contributing to Brazil’s well-rounded and deep offensive strategy.
Puerto Rico 101, South Sudan 96 (OT)
In a thrilling match, South Sudan dominated the first half with a commanding double-digit lead. However, Puerto Rico made an incredible comeback in the second half, ultimately taking the lead late in the game. Just when it seemed like all hope was lost for South Sudan, Carlik Jones of the Bulls sank a crucial three-pointer, leading to overtime. In the end, Puerto Rico emerged victorious, mainly due to their stronger and deeper lineup.
Stephen Thompson Jr. excelled for Puerto Rico, scoring an impressive 21 points, while Tremont Waters contributed 19 points and George Conditt added 18 points.
On the other hand, South Sudan received a phenomenal performance from Carlik Jones and former Laker Wenyen Gabriel, who scored 15 points each.
Greece 92, Jordan 71
Advancing to the second round, the Greeks achieved a comfortable victory, bringing them one step closer. The leading scorer for Greece was Giannoulis Larentzakis, while Ioannis Papapetrou contributed 19 points.
Jordan, on the other hand, was guided by NBA fans’ familiar figure, Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, a former Nets draft pick and six-year NBA veteran, who scored an impressive 24 points.
Spain 94, Cote d’Ivoire 64
In their first match, Spain the reigning World Cup title holders showcased their dominance, securing a resounding victory with a 30-point margin, during which each member of the squad made their mark on the scoreboard. Willy Hernangomez stood out, leading the team with an impressive tally of 22 points.
Serbia 105, China 63
In their opening match, Serbia effortlessly cruised past China with Bogdan Bogdanovic emerging as the top scorer, contributing 14 points. The game quickly slipped out of China’s grasp within the first quarter itself, as Serbia’s superior depth proved overwhelming. Notably, Kyle Anderson, the talented Timberwolves wing, failed to register a single point for China despite playing for 26 minutes.
Georgia 85, Cape Verde 60
Right from the beginning, Georgia established dominance in this match, taking a commanding 26-point lead at halftime and comfortably securing the victory. Tornike Shengala asserted himself by contributing 16 points and grabbing seven rebounds to lead the Georgian team, while Goga Bitadze made significant contributions with 15 points and Duda Sanadze scored 12 points. On the other side, Cape Verde was led by Kenneti Mendes, who scored 11 points.
