NCAA Quarterback Preview
By: Ryan Quigley
College Football is right around the corner! Here are a few Quarterbacks I am excited to see this upcoming season:
Caleb Williams, USC
Starting with the reigning Heisman trophy winner seems obvious enough, Caleb Williams has a chance to become the 2nd player in history to win back-to-back Heisman trophies and the first in nearly 50 years. Coach Lincoln Riley’s offense lends itself to putting up video game numbers, let’s see if he can meet the high expectations the Trojans have for this season.
Drake Maye, North Carolina
Drake Maye is another player that looks to be one of the top picks in the NFL Draft next season, his size and arm talent has impressed scouts. Let’s see if he puts some more big plays on tape this upcoming season for the Tar Heels.
Michael Penix Jr., Washington
After transferring from Indiana, I was a tad skeptical about the fit with the Huskies, but I will admit he has played well thus far and want to see that success continue coming off of an 11-win season last year. His name has been included in some first-round mock drafts; I would like to see him show out to justify the buzz.
Bo Nix, Oregon
Bo Nix is a player who has looked more than solid for Oregon, the Auburn transfer was crushed online after his performance against Georgia, and can we be real? Georgia’s defense these last few seasons have been immaculate. Bo Nix is a gamer who had a great season after that game, I’m excited to see what he can do for the Ducks this season.
J.J. McCarthy, Michigan
J.J. McCarthy is a player that was known for his big arm but needed more experience in the college game, his performance against Ohio State showed he is a player that should not be taken lightly. He made them respect the passing game and set up the run in a great performance in “The Game”. Let’s see what he can do as the full-time starter for the Wolverines
Sam Hartman, Notre Dame
Sam Hartman has been slinging it all over the field, a great career with Wake Forest now leads him to South Bend to show he can air it out on the big stage and try to boost his draft stock. Sam Hartman could be the missing piece the Irish have been waiting for the offense to get them to the next level.
Cade Klubnik, Clemson
D.J. Uiagalelei has transferred to Oregon State after an up and down career in Death Valley, in comes high profile QB Cade Klubnik. He had his fair share of up and down plays in his limited playing time for Clemson but let’s see what he can do now as QB1.
Jayden Daniels, LSU
I was going to say Jayden Daniels could be a Heisman dark horse but according to FanDuel he has the 2nd best odds, experienced QB in a QB friendly offensive system. The big challenge? Surviving the SEC defenses week in and week out.
Quinn Ewers, Texas
Once a top recruit for Ohio State, Quinn Ewers transferred closer to home and has shown some flashes in Austin. Longhorn fans have high expectations for the Heisman trophy candidate, the conversation of “Is Texas back?” seems to be pretty popular in the college football world and the talent in the QB room will make it that much more interesting for the next few years.
Drew Allar, Penn State
Drew Allar was a high-level recruit coming out of Ohio, his stock was skyrocketing after the camp circuit. Showing off a big arm in essentially 7 on 7’s is fun and can show a lot in terms of decision making, accuracy and the deep ball but now stepping into the starting role in Happy Valley may be a tad more challenging.
Joe Milton, Tennessee
Dude has a rocket; you saw how hard he could throw in his limited time with the Michigan Wolverines but still needed to clean up some aspects of his game. The 23-year-old looked great when he stepped in for the injured Hendon Hooker last season, especially in the Orange Bowl where he won MVP honors. Rocky Top lost a few offensive weapons to the draft, let’s see what Milton can do with this Vols squad.
